Confidence in the market place is essential and consumers place a considerable amount of trust that the products and services that they purchase are adequate.

In order to achieve high standards of quality numerous regulations and standards are in place detailing specific requirements associated with the manufacturing of products.

Many organisations, regardless of size, require independent evaluations either through choice (to reduce risk of product failure or to evaluate long term behaviour of a product for example) or because of legislative or industry requirements.

Laboratories around the world play a major role in ensuring quality and compliance by being an integral part of this process through the provision of these independent evaluations in areas such as calibration of equipment, inspection of equipment, products and processes and testing of components, materials or products.

In order to ensure that the laboratories are competent to provide this service, the international standard ISO/IEC 17025 was issued by the International Organization for Standardization in 1999. There are many commonalities with the ISO 9001 standard, but ISO/IEC 17025 adds in the concept of competence to the equation. It applies directly to those organizations that produce testing and calibration results and is globally recognised through the ILAC agreement as the international standard against which accreditation bodies assess laboratories.

Laboratory accreditation provides formal recognition that a laboratory satisfies the requirements of ISO/IEC 17025 and provides a mechanism for customers to identify and select reliable testing, measurement and calibration services. To maintain this recognition, laboratories are re-evaluated regularly by the accreditation body to ensure their continued compliance with requirements, and to check that their standard of operation is being maintained.

Laboratory accreditation is highly regarded both nationally and internationally as a reliable indicator of technical competence. Many organisations operating in the aerospace, automotive, construction, defence, food & consumer products, health sciences, oil & gas, pharmaceutical and transportation sectors routinely specify laboratory accreditation for suppliers of calibration and testing services.

If your laboratory is seeking ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation and requires assistance with the development and implementation of a suitable management system the LC Consultancy Services Ltd offer an independent service to assist with this process. Our highly experienced and professional consultants can provide assistance with the interpretation of the requirements and the subsequent implementation of procedures appropriate to your business needs.
